『ベイマックス』のシーン
ヒロ：“I got nothing. I’m done. I’m never getting in”
タダシ：“Hey, I’m not giving up on you”
ヒロ： “What are you doing?”
タダシ：“Shake things up. Use that big brain of yours to think your way out”
ヒロ：“What?”
タダシ：“Look for a new angle”
説明
In this scene, the main character Hiro needs to make something for a university showcase, so that he can attend the San Fransokyo Institute of Technology.
このシーンでは主人公のヒロは大学のショーケースのために何かを作らなきゃ！それはSan Fransokyo大学へ行くためだ
Although Hiro is trying really hard to think of a great idea, he can’t think of anything. Fortunately, Hiro’s brother Tadashi encourages him to keep going.
ヒロは一所懸命アイディアを考えているのに、何も思いつかない 。幸いなことにお兄さんのタダシはヒロを応援してくれる。
Let’s start with the first line
最初のセリフからいきましょう
Hiro says, “I got nothing. I’m done. I’m never getting in”
ヒロは「I got nothing. I’m done. I’m never getting in」と言っています
When Hiro says, “I got nothing” he does not mean “I don't have anything.” Rather, he is saying that he can’t think of anything
彼は「何も持ってない」と言ってない。却って、「何も思いつかない 」と言っている。
I got nothing. 「アイディアがない！ 何も思いつかない 」
じゃあ、「I’m done」の意味は？
Doneは「終わりました」の意味があります。
But in this situation, Hiro is tired and says, “I’m done,” meaning “I’ve had enough/ I give up/ I quit”
でも、この場合では、ヒロはとても疲れていて、「I’m done」と言う。その意味は「もういい・諦める・やめる！」
Similarly, a child might say:
“I don’t want to do my homework anymore. I give up. I’m done!”
「宿題はもうしたくない。もういい！やめる！」
In the next line, Hiro says, “I’m never getting in”
次のセリフにヒロは「I’m never getting in」と言います。
Get inはどこか、何かに「入る」ことです。
例えば、「Get in the car」は「車に入って」
そして、「I want to get into a good university」は「いい大学に入りたい」
「I’m getting in」は「そこに入る！」
But, Hiro says, “I’m never getting in”
Neverはネガティヴな意味があるので、「I’m never getting in」は「そこに入れない、行けない」という意味になります
So if we put it all together, Hiro says, “I got nothing. I’m done. I’m never getting in”ヒロのセリフを全部一緒にすると、「I got nothing. I’m done. I’m never getting in」
「何も思いつかない！やめる！絶対に入れない！」
In response, Tadashi says「Hey, I’m not giving up on you」
それに応じて、タダシは「Hey, I’m not giving up on you」と言います。
To give up means to stop trying
日本語で、「give up」は「諦めること」です。
英語の例を見ていきましょう！
１．I give up = 諦める・やめる！
２．I will not give up/ I’m not giving up = 諦めない
3. I will never give up/ I’m never giving up = 絶対に諦めない
Tadashi says, “Hey, I’m not giving up on you”
ほら、あなたのことは諦めない！
あなたを応援し続けるよ！
Next, Tadashi picks Hiro up and flips him upside down
タダシはヒロを持ち上げて逆さまにしました
So, Hiro says, “What are you doing?” 何してるの？
Tadashi responds, “Shake things up”
Shake things up は「現状を揺り動かすこと」
または、何かの変化を取り入れることです。
For example,
例えば、
“Today I think I’ll shake things up and get pancakes for lunch instead of my usual sandwich”
今日の昼ご飯は、いつものサンドイッチの代わりにパンケーキにしようかな
“To shake things up” is to change your normal behaviour
「to shake things up」はいつも通りの行動を変わること。
So Tadashi’s advice is, “What if you tried thinking and behaving in a different way?”
ですので、タダシのアドバイスは「違う考え方、行動をやってみたら？」
“What if you tried shaking things up?”
「Shake things up」をやってみたら？
Tadashi continues by saying, “Use that big brain of yours to think your way out“
続いてタダシは続いてこう言います
Brain は日本語で「脳」という意味があります。そして、「think」や「thinking」は考えることです。
じゃあ、「Think your way out 」は？
頭を使って、解決策を見つけることです
要するに、タダシのセリフは「あなたの大きい脳を使って解決を見つけて！」
“Use that big brain of yours to think your way out“
Hiro asks, “What?” 何？
So, Tadashi says, “Look for a new angle”
To “look for a new angle” or “Look from a new perspective” means to think about something from a different point of view.
つまり、違う、新しい視点から考えることです
なので、このセリフでは、タダシが言っているのが、「新たな面を見つけて、違う視点から考えてみてね」
